Getting to know the parts of a valve

Understanding the different parts of a ball valve helps one understand the important role it plays. It will also provide you with knowledge on how the ball valve processes on a daily basis. Below we’ve listed down the 5 parts of a ball valve, and we have included a description to help you understand how each part helps with the overall process of a ball valve.

Body or Shell:

Known as the principal part of a valve, the body or shell is the framework of a valve. Regardless of your valves shape and type, it’s body or ‘shell’ will still play the same role of protecting the inner valve. Apart from protecting the valve externally, it also serves as a pressure boundary of the valve making it a night in shining armor from both the inside and the outside.

Bonnet:

The bonnet pretty much does what it’s known for, it covers the opening of the valves body just as a bonnet would cover one’s head. Bonnets also serve as a second pressure boundary giving the valve the extra pressure support it needs. Made of the same material as the body, the valve bonnet is usually bolted and screwed with the body.

Trim:

The trim is a collection of valve parts such as the seat, stem, disk, and sleeves. Because these are all internal parts, it’s important that the trim of the valve is in good condition so the valve can carry on with its function. The valve can only perform its basic motions to provide proper flow control with these parts. The disk is also known as the third layer of pressure boundary alongside the body and the bonnet.

Actuator:

Responsible for the running of the stem and dish, the actuator works in conjunction with some internal parts which are located in the valve trim. Nowadays there are a large selection of actuators available for purchase. Depending on one’s preference, you can choose from with a handwheel, levers, motors, pneumatic operators, solenoids, or hydraulic arms.

Packing:

Present to prevent leaks from the space between the valve stem and its bonnet, the valve packing is made from fibrous materials like Teflon or flax. The valve packing should be able to form some sort of seal between the internal parts and the outer or external valve where the stems extend from the valve’s body. The position of the valve packing plays an important role as it’s crucial everything is lined up how they should be to prevent leakages. Leakages due to poor placement of the valve packing can cause damages to the entire valve system.
